Serene was a Policy Associate at the Mowat Centre, and co-authored the report “Diaspora Nation: An Inquiry into the Economic Potential of Diaspora Networks in Canada”. She also worked on “Redesigning Collaboration: Opportunities for Innovation in Toronto’s Labour Market”.
Serene holds a Ph.D. in Geography from York University. Her research includes diasporas, global urban theory, diversity and immigration politics, cultural and national identities, postcolonial theory, and Southeast Asia and the Asia-Pacific regions. She occasionally teaches courses in urban studies, geography, and Canadian studies at York University and the University of Toronto.
